Tweaking The Five Themes...

I have had a brief email exchange over the last couple of weeks with Todd Sattersten, co-author of 100 Best Business Books of All Time. Turns out he has visited my home town of Perth, Western Australia! It certainly is a small world.

In our discussions, Todd suggested that the Five Meta-Themes of Successful Businesses formed a renewable cycle, rather than a galaxy as I depicted below. As any thriving brand does, perpetually returning to its original purpose is the cornerstone of any successful business.

Furthermore, the new model shows that each theme does not operate in a vacuum, but is dependent on the others - very much a "chain is only as strong as its weakest link" scenario. I couldn't agree more.

Thanks again Todd for your feedback - I hope the book sells a million!

Meta-Themes of Success

The 100 Best Business Books of All Time by Jack Covert and Todd Sattersten is a must read for any business literature enthusiast.

I bought it yesterday so am only a few chapters in, but already can see it has captured the full lexicon of business books - biographies of captains of industry (Richard Branson and Alfred Sloan) intertwined with well-known business authors and thought leaders of today (Jim Collins, Seth Godin and Dan Pink to name a few).

However checking out the authors' blog yesterday, Todd Sattersten had posted a great summary of what he calls the Five Meta-Themes of successful businesses that he and Jack discovered in writing the book. Apologies to the authors, but I had a crack at depicting these themes visually here.

I am looking forward to finishing it, as it is a fantastic read so far. I have a feeling this book may become the Made To Stick of 2009.
